Future careers for China specialists
Mark Logan recently returned to the University of Oxford's China Centre to deliver a lecture and Q&A session for researchers and students currently enrolled in various programmes in Oxford.
The session brought together participants with expertise spanning a wide range of disciplines within China studies, from politics and economics to history and international relations.
He was joined by two further Alumni who have carved out captivating professional stories since graduating from the China Centre.
The discussion centred on career pathways available to those with deep China expertise, with Mark drawing on his own experience across three distinct but interconnected worlds: the British civil service and Foreign & Commonwealth Office, elected politics as a Member of Parliament, and the private sector as a political risk and public affairs consultant specialising in UK-Asia relations.
He spoke frankly about the opportunities and challenges each path presents, and how fluency in Mandarin and an intimate understanding of Chinese society can serve as a genuine differentiator across all of them.
The Q&A that followed was lively and wide-ranging, with participants pressing Mark on everything from the future of UK-China relations to the practicalities of building a career at the crossroads of politics and business in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mark commented that "the strength and energy of the student body at the China Centre is as infectious as ever, and I cannot wait to see where their choices and careers take the students over the next couple of decades."
He added that "The China Centre is testament to how this is one of the leading institutes of sinology in the western world, and terrific to see the teaching staff again, including Professors Paul Irwin Crookes and Anna Lora-Wainwright."
Mark himself is a graduate of the University of Oxford, where he completed the Modern Chinese Studies course, an experience that helped build a foundation for over two decades of delving into China across politics, diplomacy, and the private sector.
He subsequently served as the Member of Parliament for Bolton North East and as Vice-Chair of both the All-Party Parliamentary China Group and the All-Party Parliamentary Japan Group, and today advises institutions and businesses on both Asia focused and UK/Europe centred strategy.
The seminar at the University of Oxford's China Centre was organised by Kristy Bryant, a fellow at the Oxford China Policy Lab.
