Live interview on BBC Radio
Mark Logan, former British Member of Parliament for Bolton North East and a longstanding China specialist, appeared on BBC Radio this morning to discuss President Donald Trump's state visit to China - the first by a sitting US President since 2017.
Logan, who served as Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary China Group during his time in Parliament, brought rare linguistic and diplomatic depth to the interview. A near-native Mandarin speaker with working knowledge of Shanghai dialect, he has spent over two decades working on UK-China relations across government, Parliament, and the private sector. His experience also extends to the United States, having served as a field manager during the 2006 US mid-term congressional elections.
In the interview, Logan outlined what he described as the four defining issues on the agenda for the Trump-Xi summit: Taiwan, Trade, Tehran, and Tech. He assessed the delicate balance Washington and Beijing must strike across each of these interlocking challenges, drawing on his extensive background in China policy and regional geopolitics.
Logan argued that while the symbolism of a presidential state visit carries significant diplomatic weight, the substance of any agreements reached will matter far more than the optics. He noted that each of the four "T" issues carries the potential to either stabilise or further destabilise an already complex bilateral relationship.
