Meeting with Shin Nakayama, Nikkei's Editor-in-Chief for EMEA

Shin Nakayama, Nikkei's Editor-in-Chief for EMEA, met this week with Mark Logan, strategic advisor and public affairs consultant, for wide-ranging talks on UK-Japan-Asia relations and the shifting media landscape covering the region.

Nakayama-san took up the EMEA post in April 2025 after six years at Nikkei Asia in Tokyo, where he served first as News Editor and then as Editor-in-Chief. Earlier in his career he was Nikkei's Washington Correspondent, reporting from the United States between 2011 and 2014. He studied Political Science and Government at Waseda University and later completed an investigative reporting course at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

The meeting brought together two figures with deep, complementary experience of Asia. Logan, who served as MP for Bolton North East, previously worked as an official at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and spent over two decades building expertise on China, including years in the private sector there. He holds a degree in Modern Chinese Studies from Oxford, is a near-native Mandarin speaker, and is currently developing his Japanese. He has also held Vice-Chair roles in the All-Party Parliamentary China and Japan Groups.

Logan now advises organisations on UK-Asia strategy and is a regular commentator on the region, writing for outlets including the South China Morning Post, Global Times and his own Substack, alongside frequent BBC Radio appearances.

The discussion between Nakayama-san and Logan touched on how Western media organisations are covering an increasingly complex international environment, and on the broader UK-Japan relationship as it continues to develop.
